Building Performance Analysis
There are often activities or processes within a building structure that require a higher level of analysis to assess performance. This can range from a dynamic analysis of a free-standing 270-foot tall bell tower with a 1600 pound swinging church bells to a vibration analysis of a structure for an electron microscopes. JQ is able to perform these and the following for your structure:

In high wind zones, JQ assists the architect in the specification of elements of the building envelope including:

During construction, JQ provides review of contractor submittals associated with these elements, and additional site visits to observe the initial installation of these elements.
Hydraulic structures are structures that are submerged, or partially submerged, in any body of water thereby disrupting or controlling the flow of water. Design of hydraulic structures requires a thorough understanding of global stability, the local impact on structural elements subjected to environmental forces, and the necessity for long-term durability. JQ is experienced in the design and analysis of hydraulic structures ranging from simple retaining walls to complex dam structures.
Preserving the architectural heritage of an existing building is an important endeavor for structures of historical significance. JQ provides historic preservation services including initial condition assessment, structural capacity evaluation, recommendations for restoration, modification and repair, and construction administration. We have experience evaluating traditional and antiquated construction techniques, structural systems, and materials. We work closely with our clients, historical architects, and contractors to create construction solutions that will restore and maintain the structural integrity of historic structures.
Building Information Analysis
We are a 100% fully BIM capable firm across multiple platforms with ability to work with any client for any project. JQ embraced Building Information Modeling (BIM) concepts starting in 2007, implementing Revit and Civil 3D based systems for all production staff. Since then, JQ has established itself throughout the region as a leader in BIM modeling, taking a proactive approach on every project to realize the full benefits of BIM. We are highly experienced in conceptual phase design and high level concept development, detailed clash detection in final design, implementation of databasing, scheduling and cost information utilization.
Today, modeling is only the start of JQ’s approach to full BIM implementation. We engage clients early in model development to understand where they can benefit most from the model through applications such as GIS systems integration, cost modeling and facility information management. These systems provide the end user with the real world benefit of a dynamic model that becomes a long term tool in the daily operation and maintenance of their facility. Integration of BIM models with plant SCADA systems and facility asset management software such as Maximo are just a few examples of the efficient end-user systems we accommodate throughout our model development.
Continuing to push the envelope, JQ’s LIDAR laser scanning capabilities further refine our BIM approach to existing facilities. Laser scanning provides true as-built conditions eliminating costly field omissions where existing utilities and facility components are often overlooked. Proper utilization of these technologies forms the basis of producing accurate construction documents on a consistent basis – a reputation JQ established since its inception in 1984 and continues to improve upon today.
Due in large part to our extensive experience in wastewater and power facility design, JQ has in-depth knowledge of material selection and protection systems in dealing with service environments subject to corrosive conditions. From designing with stainless steel, aluminum and fiberglass reinforced plastics, to real world experience with an array of protective coating and liner systems, to the production of corrosion control guidelines and specifications for municipalities, JQ brings valuable resources as a key contributing member to any design team in dealing with harsh environments.
Condition assessment services generally include the repair of damaged or deteriorating structural elements or the modification of an existing structure for a change in use or occupancy. JQ is skilled at evaluating the structural integrity and load-carrying capacity of individual structural elements or entire structural systems. We carefully document existing conditions and develop economical solutions to the repair and rehabilitation of structural systems, and we provide construction administration services to observe that the proper repair materials and techniques are utilized.
Secure design of facilities incorporates sophisticated techniques and strategies to minimize the impact of a deliberate explosive threat on a building and its occupants. JQ engineers are experienced with the provisions developed by the US General Services Administration and the US Department of Defense for the design of structural components to mitigate damage from blast loading and for the design of structural systems to resist the potential for progressive collapse.
Protecting a building structure from progressive collapse involves the design of structural systems that will limit the damage from a local failure from becoming disproportionate to the original cause. Our engineers are capable of conducting linear and nonlinear analysis of structural systems, in a variety of building materials, to provide sufficient continuity, redundancy, and energy dissipating capacity in the members and connections of the structure to resist progressive collapse. We incorporate sound building layout strategies with these analysis to provide a robust, yet economical, structural frame that meets the secure design criteria.
